Diy filter help plz

I am workin on makein my tank all diy i am havein alot of troble with the filter i have a 10 gallon tank an overflow goin into a 2 gallon container which has my equipment in it filter heater ect. I am wanting to make a diy filter if i can useing my curent set up but have no idea if it will work i was thinking of basically takeing a warter bottle and putting filter media in it sticking my overflow outlet into the top and letting it trickle through

Why not just put the media in the 2 gallon container?

Are you trying to make it so that your DIY filter has no bypass? That is, so that the outlet seals against the neck of the water bottle? I don't know what kind of setup you've got to move water to and from the tank, but you'd want to be really really sure you don't wind up with a clogged up bottle and the overflow getting stopped up completely. Just trying to avoid a 2g flood. :-)

I like sharkfood's idea better though honestly, just turn it into a 2g filter.
