Tap water won't work. Unless it's 4DKH out of the tap which is the case sometimes. Mine is actually really close to 4...

Tap water can never be used. The whole point of the 4 dKH water is to have some water that contains nothing that might affect the pH except carbonates (bicarbonates). Tap water will never qualify. I like this method: https://www.plantedtank.net/forums/fe...tml#post801218 because no precision measuring is required, and the amount of water combined with the bicarbonate of soda crystals isn't a factor.

You can use distilled water. If that is what you use in batteries, then, yes.

This all seems sooooo convaluted a to simple mind like mine. Can one not simply combine bs and distilled water and adjust until a 4 degree measure is reached? I just add a pinch of bs to a tumbler full of distilled water, if my reading is less than 4, I add bs until I reach 4. More commonly I have an initial reading of 5, dump out some of the mixture and add more distilled water until a reading of 4 is reached.

That would be a great method, except that the amount of baking soda needed is so small that it is very hard to come nearly that close to 4 dKH. When I did did it that way, my first mix was more like 100 dKH. I ended up using up a whole gallon of distilled water and still didn't get very close to 4 dKH. But, it can be done.

The problem is that KH test kits aren't necessarily very accurate. They are better than GH test kits, but not great. I found that mine indicated that my 4 dKH water, mixed with lab standard KH water, was 3 dKH.

Thanks Hoppy. I always appreciate your input. The accuracy of the KH test (more so, my ability to maintain uniform drop size, exact 5ml water in the test tube) is what I thought would be the weak link. I think I'm just going to buy some. Somewhere?

The method I suggested doesn't involve measuring 5 ml of water. It uses household measuring cups. Of course it also makes you end up with a lot more of the 4 dKH, as well as other dKH water than you want, but distilled water only costs about $1 per gallon.

I was referring to using a KH kit. My API KH kit comes standard with a 5ml test vial to determine KH. Do you use a KH kit while calibrating your method? If so, how is it accurate in that scenario?
