Question DIY HOB filter Cartridge Ideas?

I have a FORZA Aquatop 40-80 Aquarium filter, but the cartridges are very overpriced ($6 per cartridge). I have this old filter lying around my house, and I want to put it to work. What are your ideas for creating a reusable cartridge for a HOB filter? Thanks y'all.

Buy bulk sponge, cut to fit.
Buy bulk sponge, cut to make barrier to which you fill with bulk bio-media.
Buy bulk filter floss, place after (last place water flows through) larger mechanical and biomedia.

Squeeze bulk sponge out at each water change (in old tank water).

Gently rinse biomedia in old tank water once every few weeks.

Completely change (remove, throw out, replace with new) filter floss once per week - or as needed.

I never buy cartridges but sub in some form of cut to fit media, either sponge of some form of bonded filter floss. My current goto for floss is the media used for commercial heat/AC as it is very cheap and much the same as what we buy as media. The trick is in spotting how to attach or support each type media as each brand does use different plastic frames, etc.
Scratch off using carbon as it is not normally needed and is too messy and weird for most of us.

I'm ok with scratching off the carbon. I didn't know it wasn't required tho.
Thanks!

I just stuff the only hob I have with a "carbon cartridge" with filter floss where the carbon cartridge used to be ;/ it's already got some sponges before it, when it gets dirty I just replace it with more filter floss which is cheap af.

Excuse my jumping in here, but this is relevant to me as well! Questioning the sponges/filter floss? When I google bulk filter floss it comes up with what looks like sponge material white/pink or white/green pond filter material cut to fit. Which do you consider that? If I put that first, then a net bag full of bio-material is that good? Or am I missing a layer? So much to learn!!

This works well https://www.amazon.com/Polyfill-Stuf.../dp/B0085A87NY

You can get it at walmart, michaels, most craft stores. Make sure its non allergenic or something along those lines. That means its not suppose to have any additives which can cause reactions.

Also I use this stuff which I used to cover motorcycle seat padding to make the leather smooth out on the surface. Its basically the poly but in sheet form (or atleast something similar to this as I bought mine locally). Make sure its poly only though. Cut it to shape. I usually double it up.

Hello Friends!
I bought bulk sponge and cut it to fit into the filter (Green). As you see in the pics, I have added an aluminum barrier so the water must go up the sponge, into the floss, and out the filter. It kinda resembles an Aquaclear Filter, without the refilteration. After the first filter change, it caught a lot of water debris. Filter changes are as simple as an Aquaclear, and the concept works really well! I would recommend this if you have a filter that needs filter cartridges that are too expensive or are not produced anymore.
