DIY 5 gallon tank, what about rims?

I'm planning on building my own 5 gallon tank, if it goes well I'll also be doing a 10 gallon. I recently re-did a tank that was broken so I think I'll be okay () with putting all the glass and silicone together. My biggest question is about rims. Do I need rims? If not should I use thicker glass ( I was planning on 4mm) If it would be better to have them or I decide I rather the look what do I make them out of and how? I've tried searching for info on this but not many people make small tanks, any one got ideas/experience?

I saw that page, it is helpful. With my measurements and 4mm glass it classes it as 'very safe' but it doesn't mention rims, does it assume you are doing an aquarium with a rim or without?

rimless....but the question becomes why? If its gonna be an odd shape or you just want the experience then go for it, but you can get a regular 5 gallon for $5-10 bucks, thats less then you'll spend on silicone.

Thanks, that helps. So there should be no problems with rimless on a tank that size?

I live in Portugal, locally the cheapest 5 gallon tank I found cost 40 euros and it looked tacky and badly made, one I liked (but not particularly fancy) cost more like 70 euros (it was a kit including filter etc, but I already have those things. I think those prices are just silly especially because I can get a 20gallon for 30something euros in the same shops, but I've looked everywhere and just haven't found better.

It also got me thinking that if I do it myself I can have the exact measurements I want, which would be handy. I have the silicone already from fixing another tank (it only cost 5 euros) and the glass will cost about 10 euros if I get it cut, if I decide I'm brave enough to cut it myself I probably have enough sitting around for free. Even if I find a 'cheep' tank it's going to cost me more than that.

My biggest problem has been finding information on making small tanks because it's not worth it for most people.

4mm glass should be more than sufficient on a 5g tank.
