What size tubing for siphon?

Hi, everyone.

I want a longer than usual siphon, so I thought I'd make one. What diameter hose would I want for a 20 gallon tank? Are they normally made of clear vinyl? Are there better alternatives? I want to make it 20' or more, so I can drain directly out the door and into the garden. I will probably add a ball joint and a squeeze bulb. The vacuum chamber will be made from a water bottle, unless someone has a better idea.

Thanks!

Anywhere from 1/2" to 3/4" should be fine assuming you'd like to be able to vac the substrate a bit in the process. If not, then go bigger for faster water changes.

If you'd like a vac head and ball valve, use the one from this kit for $5 and pair it with your tubing: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0002APRVK/

I do not find value in the ready made but DIY using a ready made vac, added to 5/8 inch tubing of whatever length I need. A spot of super glue if it tends to let the joint come apart. I run clear and it does get dirty inside but nothing that bothers the flow.
Do a look for :
Aquarium Pump Tank Vacuum
I find them for under five dollars on the auction.
These are my choice for a cheap, quick and easy way to get the squeeze bulb for easy starting as well as the basic tube at the end which also has a screen which is something I have a hard time building but find I must have to avoid sucking small fish out.

The reinforced vinyl tubing does not kink nearly as much as the completely clear vinyl tubing. Spiral pond tubing is even better, it is more flexible and more kink resistant. When I needed a longer python I also just repurposed my old python and just added a longer hose (tubing).
