Sponge Filter + Powerhead = Problems?

Hey guys! In an effort to add water flow to my tank and combine 2 pieces of equipment, I recently bought and attached a powerhead to the sponge filter in my tank that I originally was using with an air pump. However, I noticed that after a few minutes, the sponge filter would slightly deform, getting "sucked" towards the intake. Although I didn't think it was the problem, I tried cleaning the sponge, gave it a few good squeezes, but this was the cleanest I can get it. While I'm guessing that the sponge filter probably is still working fine, the output flow of the powerhead is significantly reduced.

I'm still playing with positioning, but if I can get the flow to where I want it, is any of this a problem? Is there a better solution I am missing? Im thinking a bigger sponge will work, but I'd rather it not take too much space. Thoughts? Thanks for the help!
