Wood knots

What affect can/will they have on the structural integrity of a stand?

Where are they in the stand? what kind of board? That is all very relative to the discussion.

I was mainly hoping for a discussion on wood knots in general. What to look for, where they shouldn't be, etc.

I am currently working on a multi-tank stand using 2x4s. I noticed a couple of my boards have knots in locations that could be problem areas. I might not use them.

2 x 4's sold for use as studs have to meet certain standards, and I think that would make them adequate for a stand even if they do have some knots. Obviously a loose knot that is almost as wide as the board would be a problem.

There are some loose, quarter size knots on a few of my boards that concern me some. I found a really good link on the subject that answered pretty much everything for me, and after reading it, I think I'll just replace the few problem boards with new ones. I saved it on my computer at work, and can't seem to find it now. I'll post it here tomorrow for anyone that cares to read it.
