DIY Fry refuge
I had some lamprolus caudopunctatus spawn and know where to put the fry. They spawned in my grow out tank, a 50 gal breeder, where I place species that need a little more size before they can go into there intended home. This posed a problem. Also the fry that are said to be difficult to raise for the first few days because they are to small to take brine shrimp. I watch as the parents defended the fry for four days. I fed some freshly hatched brine a they were taking it. Not sure what they lived off of but they seemed to be doing good. I did how ever realize that the parents couldn't raise them for long in the conditions they were in. It was time to put on the DIY thinking cap and see what i could come up with.
Here was the solution I came up with. I used a Rubbermaid container, sponge filter and a peace of foam. The container sits in the 50 gal breeder clamp to the rim. I have a sponge filter with sponges in the rubbermaid and the exhaust in the main tank at one end of the container. The other end of the container has a peace of sponge cut into the side. Water pass into the container in throught the foam and out through the sponge filter. It keeps the fry safe and a constant change of water in the small tank.
