Found cheap LEDs for moon light.

My friend found this and it makes a great moon light. I just ordered some for my tank also. It is 1m roll of led strip that runs on 12V, and is only $5.10.

Let us know how this works, I'm very interested! Do you have any pics of it in use?

Do you just wire it to a power plug? Do you know if it is the same blue wavelength other commercial aquarium moon light leds are, like 450nm to 470nm ? I'm just very curious because this is a really good find if it works out well.

Here is my $5 moon light setup in my 55g tank.
http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo...eat=directlink
This is a 3 LED light pod from my local truck stop. it runs on 12v. I dug through the pile of DC adaptors I had layin around intill I found a 12V output.
Here is a link to a great deal on this type of light.

Anothe option for a power source is an old pc power supply. If you happen to have some old pc stuff layin around.

So I got the led strip today and it is very nice. I hooked it up to an old 12v/400ma dc adapter, and it is nice and bright. Definitely recommend. Below is a test pic just sitting on the empty tank, but it comes with sticky back to attach to bottom of hood.

Does moonlighting affect plant or algal growth?

Check the link on the first post.

OP, do you have pics of the wiring you did? I'm electronically inept but would like to take on a cool project like this.

I don't have any pictures of the wiring, but it is very simple. I cut off the plug to the adapter, and soldered the white wire to the red wire of the led strip, and the bare wire to the black wire.

As far as potential algae growth, I would be very surprised if there was enough to grow anything as it comes out to 5 watts, but you could always use lower voltage, or cut off some of the LEDs.
