Google sketchup is amazing

I am trying to design a canopy for my 54 gallon bowfront corner tank and i's been hard to describe the lid design I have in mind. I downloaded Google Sketchup and on a flight from NY to Denver I made this:

Great tool. Free and easy to use!

It is a pretty nifty program. It is in my list of "design" programs listed on my resume lol. Many Architectural firms use it as a massing tool to pre-design the exterior of commercial buildings. I myself find it redundant, since all of my personal designs are done in a BIM solution program (design the building in 3d and pull your plans and all information from the model)

When you get a chance, look for renderers for Sketchup, you can make some pretty cool and realistic renders from that.

look under photorealistic rendering section of this plugin site.

Can you make sub-assemblies with it and or drafting sheets? I work with someone over the water and that would be nifty. Have used SW for 10 years but the maintenance fees are a little steep.

it does have some light capabilities to do plans. I have only used it for massing models for buildings, then moving over to Autocad Architecture / Revit for design.

This is useful. I need to design a full wall of shelves for my basement. I have the vision in my head but the wife won't let me start building until I can show her my concept....
