Double aquarium rack

Building a DIY rack. Nothing too big, it'll just hold 2-3 20 gallon tanks.

My question is: Should I pre-drill holes in the 2x4's? Ive read it can prevent the boards from splitting, but was unsure how likely that was to happen when screwing them together.

Thanks for the help!

2x4's should not split, especially newer wood. Having said that, I always pre-drill with a countersink bit because it's clean and always looks nice

I used Spax screws with no problem. I also cut dados in the vertical legs so I have wood to wood to the floor. I never count on screws to hold a tank.
