DIY Wavemaker Speed Control

Black duct tape wrapped around the water inlets to restrict flow.

Restricting the inlet of a pump is hard on the pump...

A better way is to find a way to diffuse the flow from the outlet, or to divert some of the flow back to the inlet.

What kind of pump are you referring to in particular? Propeller style like the Vortech or Koralia? They tend to wear out faster when the basket is heavily restricted. A better way to go is a DC pump with a controller for something like them...

I ordered some sunSun 500gph pumps from amazon. Unfortunately they are sealed AC input.

Maybe modify the propeller to move less water?

Edit: The design is a propeller inside a basket. There are grooves on the back for water in. I am just taping off half the input vents to slow flow.
