Float valve overflow protection w/ sump

Does anyone use a float valve for overflow protection with their tanks outlet/sumps inlet? I don't know how reliable they would be seeing as it would only take a small piece of plant to get stuck in there to keep the siphon open. Just wondering what your input was on this.

My tank is drilled and the overflow is a 1'' pipe, highly unlikely to plug up. I keep the level in my sump low enough to accommodate any water that siphons back in if my pump dies.

So no I don't use a float valve.
