Raspberry Pi for RGB accent LED???

Hey everyone. I have a 55 gal tank in the main room of my house. The room itself is pretty neutral colored which is why the tank is in this room. What I would like to do is put a couple RGB LED strips along the frame on the back side of the tank so that I could light up the wall behind the tank in a way that would mimic the sun's position. Very similar to what these new fangled LED tank lights can do with ramp up and down.

I've thought about getting one of those lights for the tank but I don't want to spend the money on it and possibly not really like it. Plus I've been wanting to mess with a Raspberry Pi forever and figured this may be a good excuse.

1) does anyone know of a resource for information that is easily understood by a noon?

2) would it be possible to only have certain locations of an LED strip light. Ie morning would start with a dull light blue at the bottom strip. Late afternoon would be more yellow from the top which would fade to a red which would get brighter at the bottom as the day got later then purple only at the bottom. The number of LEDs lit on both strips as well as the color of tge lit LEDs would have to be adjusted to get the fading and color transitions I'm looking for.

If anyone has used the HUE+ for lighting their PC, This is the functionality I'm looking for. However the software for the HUE+ doesn't allow for automated adjustments to the colors.

Any assistance on this would be greatly appreciated

Thanks for that. I'll have to look into node-red a bit more bit I'm thinking it may be out of the realm of what I'm looking for ATM. It's definitely something I may consider down the road if I want to mimic IRL. Right now I'm just trying to get a preset timing of transitions for RGB LED strips

Then try cayenne. If you are not concerned about losing functionality if you lose web connection. It has a lot of the Off the shelf widgets you can get at Home Depot. Also you can download a fully configured image for the ad card that goes in the pi
