DIY Sponge filter does it work?

Clearly i am paranoid if this sponge filter i made is good enough for my 3 gallon tank.

H=15cm W= 3.5cm

Heres some photos:

I might be thinking of getting the ATI's mini sponge filter if this does not work.

Put a drop of food color next to the sponge and see if it gets sucked in.

I see no reason why it would not work but I would zip tie around the sponge at the top where the airline goes in so it only draws water through the sponge. The water will take the path of least resistance and that gap looks pretty inviting. Just my 2 cents.

I don't see why not it would probably be enough for a 10g as long as you have decent air going through it and your not over stocking it.
