Can I get results from DIY CO2?

I've got a 60G tank. This hobby is already out of hand (7 aquariums), so I'm not ready to drop $200 on a pressurized co2 setup. I thought I'd give diy co2 a shot, but the results haven't been great. The ph test says I've gone from 3ppm to maybe 5ppm. I'm just running a 2L of regular red star baking yeast, and 2 cups sugar. Getting about 1bps, which I hear is about as good as I can expect. It passes through an air stone and into a power head. Not only have I got alot of water, but I'm also running a HOB, which doesn't help matters. I've got the water level as high as possible to cut down on surface disturbance. Is this a lost cause? I bought same champagne yeast because I heard it helps. I'll try it next. Is it possible by adding 2 or 3 bottles with a better diffuser I could get decent results?

You can try and supplement the bottles with Excel, I run 3 bottle and no Excel on my 10g, and 2 bottles with Excel in my 5g (still have algae problems in this one), which works for me but there is a huge difference in our volume..

Be aware that you cannot accurately estimate your CO2 levels using the pH/kH/CO2 relationship since you have two unknowns (you do not know your CO2 nor your kH). Unfortunately, while you may believe your kH is known (i.e. you are using a kH test kit), there are other factors that will affect kH (such as phosphates). For CO2 estimation, the assumption is that the only contribution to kH is from carbonates.

The best way to estimate your CO2 is to get a drop checker with a 4 dkH reference solution.

That was an aside. For DIY CO2, sure, you can get it to work in a 60 gallon aquarium, but as you have realized, you will likely need multiple 2L bottles. I would not start off with any less than 3 bottles (and I would work my way up from there).

DIY CO2 is not the way to go for such a large aquarium.

You cannot control the accuracy of the CO2 with a DIY setup, however IME I have had explosive growth doing the yeast sugar method. I would run the tubing directly into my power head. Good growth, just difficult to monitor accurately.

I ran 2 bottles of the DIY into a 20gallon. For a 60, I would go with at least 2, if not 3-4 bottles.

If you have a low light setup, DIY can work, although maintaining the consistency over time is a hassle. I can understand your situation and that was the reason why I cut back from 5 smaller tanks to just 2 large ones now.

Patience is the name of the game.
