DIY rimless all-glass tank

OK, so a while ago I had a 10g that sprang a leak near the top. I replaced the tank and the old leaky one has been sitting around my apartment tempting me...

This morning I decided to remove the top and bottom black plastic rim and I spraypainted the back pane black. I plan on redoing the silicone seal around the inside of the whole tank.

My question:
Will this tank have enough integrity to hold together? Is the plastic rim necessary on store bought tanks? ...10g is a lot of water to leak in the second story of an apartment!

It should be fine, I am running a 20 gallon long with no rims. Just be sure that when you are resealing it that you remove all the old silicone. Scrape it off with a razor blade and then scrub with rubbing alcohol to remove the residual.

This is the thread I had going while I was resealing the rimless tank, there is some good info in there from various people.
