Pump into a powerhead?

Recently I learned about DIY canister filters and wanted to try building one. I have a water pump with a screen output, but this part is removable. Can I fit some kind of rigid tube into the impeller socket to make it work as a powerhead?

What kind of tubing would you recommend? I thought of using the kind for irrigation or some tiny PVC if I could find it.

I have used clear tubing from the hardware store..I also used a piece of "toro silly pipe" for an extension to a canister intake.I would take a look around at ACE or the box stores and see what they have, just try to be sure it's safe for water.
