Scaffolding pipe aquarium stand.

This guy made a 420 gal stand out of galvanized scaffolding pipes. It seems to have worked. Sorry if this has been already posted.

The tube is full of things are total nonsense as well as those which are totally great so I rarely watch them.
But the idea is certainly one worth exploring. Steel is certainly strong enough and from there it is just a matter of having the right material, skills, and tools to bring it together. Many do use steel frames to be covered by wood for appearance. Many commercial stands/racks are metal.
So the question might come back around to what you want?

I'm just surprised that no one else has posted a vid on this. Stands are so expensive.

If you look at the frame the pipes go into angle brackets so it doesn't provide a flat surface for the tank. If you put a plywood sheet on top of the frame there will still be stress points.

Scaffolding pipe aquarium stand.

Perhaps it makes sense for the 420 gallon tank he is using this for, but using scaffolding for smaller builds doesn't make much sense. On smaller builds I think that the size of piping used here would be extremely distracting. If you were to scale the concept down using iron pipe the cost is prohibitive since you could usually buy a stand for around the same price that you could build it for.
