Help making DIY Co2 setup

I'm still confused. I've been reading and I can't grasp onto the parts I need and what does what.

I understand the make of the Co2 with the yeast and sugar. I understand how to put the tube in the 2 liter bottle. I understand I need a check valve. What else do I need? What does a diffuser do? Is this the same thing as an airstone?

Yes. Diffuser simply break the big bubbles up into smaller one for better surface-contact.

Some of the airstone melt from the Co2's corrosive property though so look into that.

sticking the end of the tube in to the intake of the filter/power head is one of the best ways to diffuse diy co2

Thanks again! How do I figure out the KH? I don't have a water hardness tester in my kit.
