Alu Etch/Primer/Paint vs Silicone

I got a folded aluminum box I want to paint. I got to silicone the cracks (inside the box) to prevent light from seeping through. Should I silicone first then use the etcher/primer to paint or should I paint first then silicone the cracks over the paint?

Depending on what type of silicone you use, the paint may not stick. My advice, paint first then silicone.

Paint will not stick to most silicone so make sure you use something that is paintable if you want to paint after. Or use something else that is paintable. If you paint first, it is likely fine but if there is stress on the box, the paint can lift where the silicone attaches.

If it were me, I would silicone first, then paint, either masking the silicone, or not caring if the paint flaked. Better, I would find a paintable epoxy.

That was my first idea but i ended up voicing a concern about wether the aluminum etcher would attack the silicone. Not having bought the etcher yet, no test could be made.

A friend of mine just gave me some. I presently have some curing to check out it's sanding capabilities (got to wait 6 hours). I might end up filling from the outside to round off the box's corners. Would make for a much nicer finish.
