DIY Light Hood question

Hello all I have a few questions about a 20 gallon long DIY lighting hood. I am debating on whether or not to get a 20 gallon long or 20 gallon regular kit from store. I like the look of the 20 long but it is more expensive.

20 gallon long cost breakdown:
Filter- 20 bucks
Light Hood- 35 bucks
Tank- 40 bucks
Glass Lid - 20 bucks
Total- 115 bucks

20 gallon kit from store cost breakdown:
20 gallon kit- 70 bucks
Total- 70 bucks

If I can get the cost down of a 20 long low enough to make me switch I would go for it. Any advice as to what to do to make a cheap DIY light hood. I will be using CFL bulbs which I already have.

You could use that extra money on fish, plants, etc.
Your choice though. Enjoy your new tank, which ever it is. ;-)

$40 is basically nothing in this hobby. It's all about what you want. The kit is full of stuff a lot of people here wouldn't really use.

The reason I consider the kit is because of the filter and hood. Hoods can be pretty expensive. 40 bucks is quite a bit for me. I have a ten gallon I've spent very little money on and I have running great.

Haha, I'm proud of my cowboys this year!

The filter sucks in the kit. Save up your moeny for a canister filter. I bought a 29 gallon kit for 110 dollars. After a year i changed the ligh fixture and the filter is broken. So i will not buy a kit again! Jsut buy the 20 gallon long and go hunting for some canister filters.

Consider sunsun canister filters, though more than you are looking at now. Found on ebay.

The hoods in these kits are essentially useless, esp for a 20H. The 20L is a much more desirable tank.

Just get a good Aquaclear H.O.B. I am setting up a twenty gallon long too and that is what I am going to use.
