I know these fish are very aggressive and eat snails etc. My question is would a puffer kill shrimp indiscriminately or just to eat when it was hungry? I was considering keeping these with shrimp as a self contained eco system where I wouldnt have to feed the tank.
I believe it'll eat it no matter if its hungry or not. Shrimps would be a better snack for it than their regular food. I've seen puffers wipe out tanks of snails - it didn't matter if they had 10, they just kept eating! Same would probably happen with shrimp I feel.
A different self sustained tank would be just shrimp and algae with other algae eating fish like otos. Not as cool though
I agree. My brother has green spotted puffers and they eat, eat, eat. I can't believe it but they don't stop until everything is gone no matter what is in the tank with them. The only thing I haven't seen (and it really surprises me) is guppy fry.
