African Side Neck
I had a student came up to me on Friday asking if I could help her to learn how to care for an African Side Neck turtle. First off I know nothing about turtles, however the kid knew Im an animal nerd and her parents are less than helpful. I told her I would do research online and help her to figure out a less expensive habitat and proper care for the animal. She reported to me that she has owned this species in the past however kept it in a 10G dry tank without any UVB light and fed it only "turtle sticks" which it never ate. The animal of course died within 6 months. Thus why she wants to learn how to properly care for the animal now.
I figured that a large rubbermaid tote would be a good base for her, I have seen 50G ones at target for under $20.
I was also told by a store associate at Petsmart(only petshop we have) that they are "semi-aquatic" thus unlike a RES dont need a huge swimming area. I had thought that we could set up a basking area using a large plastic container filled with aquarium gravel. The water line could be just under the height of the basking area to keep it dry. The basking area would have a UVB bulb and a heat lamp using clamp on shop lights.
Would 5-7" of water be deep enough for the turtle? For filtration I have several internal aquarium filters I could give her to assist in the cost.
Diet...given the fact she is a young student and without a lot of money. I figure this area will be a bit tricky for her to keep up independently. I have read that this species of turtle enjoys fresh green vegetables, earthworms, meal worms, feeder fish, and crickets, along with some fruits such as banana. Would the animal require any supplements or additional foods? How many times per week should it be fed, and what foods are best for it?
