AR mini question

My AR minis weren’t so mini. They were shooting up to the roof. So much for foreground planting. I made the mistake of chopping them down to three inches high without replanting the tops, thinking maybe new stalks would grow and replace the old ones. Three weeks later I just have a bunch of old stumpy stalks with algae ridden pale leaves. My question is, when i replant the tops next time, do i insert them between the old stalks, or do i uproot the old ones completely before replanting the tops? My substrate doesn’t hold stalks without roots that well, so it does help to have other growth around them, but...thanks

You probably have the regular version not the mini. In either case, rooted stumps should produce new ones easily.

As for how to replant the tops. You can insert them between the stumps, the group will look nicer, but you'll have to watch for the new stump growth being shaded. So..couple three weeks later you may need to create some space so the smaller new stems coming out of the stumps can get enough light

Thank you. How low would you chop off the stalks if you want them to regrow? They do need a few inches of remaining leaves to be able to photosynthesize, right?

I have very healthy AR mini and the highest they grow is 6-7". You didn't state the height, but if yours are significantly higher than that, as @burr740 mentioned, it is likely not mini. If they are not mini, you are probably going to want to move them, anyway, to the background.

IME, regarding mini and regular, I've chopped them down to maybe an inch high, removed maybe 50% of the leaves (leaving 2 or 3 leaves) on the remaining stalk and they blossomed greatly. You might find this link useful:
