ive been getting into art lately and decided to make a display chest for all my derwent pencils ive been collecting over the years so i came across some really nice new-guinean rosewood that was going to be thrown away so i claimed it there over 1200 pencils in 9 drawers and weighs close to 100kg.
another project ive really been enjoying is a ornate custom jewelry box thats made from cedar thats close to 100 years old and some nice contrasting timbers like queen ebony and canadian birds eye maple. theres also some nz paua shell incorporated into the banding that was really scary to make on the saw. ripping strips of timber 2mm wide by 4mm without a riving knife guard is very dangerous and not recomended.
the box is only half complete and making the slide out drawer this week, i will post some updates when im nearly completed and spraying it
cheers from aussie
and it begins
gluing the top lid together
assembling the box together
dry and glue lines scraped
lid together with box
i think the worlds most sexiest drawer-sides, ebony and canadian birds eye maple with nz paua shell inlay ;-)
breakdown of finger-jointed drawer
drawer glued up and checked in with roofing square
i finished the jewelry box today and around 35hrs went into it from start to scratch, not bad for my first box and i went all out with exotic woods and paua shell banding and a compass inlay. heres some pics of the final sanding and spraying stage

just been down the shed and have finally found some inspiration to get back into some decent woodwork.
i havnt made much the last few months and thought i would make a nice long hall table from some exotic woods i have stashed away. the last project i made i didnt get any photos and was a custom turntable surround made from 35mm thick ebony i bought a while ago. luckily i had some left over peices along with some beautiful hairy oak and purple heart to mix up. so my new creation is happening and very happy to make a start tonight, heres some pics of the timber
qld silky oak and Solomon queen ebony
mixed woods of all colours

trenching out rosewood strips
here you can see the the scale of the tiny little strips of wood against my thumb,I cut them all out on the table saw. they measure 2x2mm and 900mm long
Your inlay work is outstanding. Really nice work and love how you find a purpose for scrap pieces and give them a place to shine. Wish the scrap pieces around my house were that nice, but I'm not building high end furniture either haha. Great work
heres some more pics of the table i did last week to completion. total time for this hall table was 20hrs from start to finish
exploded view of all components ready
marking out where the rails and legs are to be positioned
here i used a big piece of timber and checked out where the legs and rails joined to maximize strength
glued up and ready for making the drawer boxes and inner runners
sorry guys but i didnt take any pics of the drawer runner and box making. i ran over my phone and hadnt any camera in the work place but heres the finished result of the hall table
