I'm Matt. I'm 40. I live in New Hampshire with my wife and kids.
About 2 months ago my daughter started asking for fish, and I wasn't having any of it. I kept freshwater fish only tanks of various varieties as a teenager and I just haven't looked at the hobby since. But I started considering saltwater tanks, and while we were looking at those, I kept seeing these tanks that I thought looked a lot better... the planted freshwater tanks. That, for me, is worth the work. My wife is all about houseplants, and she's totally on board. It's going to be a team effort. My daughter will have her fish and a handful of minor, well-controlled responsibilities, but it's going to be a tank that the adults create and maintain as a pretty addition to our living room.
I ordered a 73 gallon Waterbox Clear aquarium with stand and lights in one package, direct from the company, with a "Usually ships in 6 weeks" time frame. That was last week, so here's hoping it's not too long.
I get a lot out of forums and after a period of information-suck and trials, I try to contribute once I have worthwhile experience to report. I can't tell you guys anything about planted tanks yet, but if you need any info on building a race truck right now, I'm your guy!
So anyway, that's my story. I have plans... lots of plans... A notebook filled with sketches, equipment lists, substrate ideas, and livestock. Probably half of the ideas came from this forum and searching for what's possible compared to what we want. So I hope you'll tell me what you think. At some point soon I'll post a thread with what I'm trying to do, and how I intend to go about it. If you're the type to want to offer feedback, I'd really appreciate telling me about the big rookie mistakes I'll inevitably be making.
