Went to the Georgia Aquarium yesterday

Had my first trip to the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta this weekend. It was a neat time but was more of a Disney experience than a museum experience. In other words, lots of noise and flashing lights, kids banging on glass, touching pools and so forth rather than a reverent, educational vibe. But there were some impressive displays and it's worth the cost of admission if ever in the area.

The amount of freshwater was pretty limited (and lots of fw fish were cultivars rather than wild-types), but that's to be expected. Didn't see a planted set up that rivaled many I see on here, which is a testament to our forum member's abilities!

Pretty cool to see such large rainbow and discus tanks!

That's whale shark though... just the engineering of the entire aquarium is amazing!

Cool pictures. You must go to the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

I dont think I've been to an aquarium in NC, but I fondly remember one in charleston, SC that was more reverent.

Aside from that, as @NotCousteau pointed out, Monterey bay is definitely a reverent one. They release the official fish sustainability chart. How high a reputation is that?! I loved Tennessee aquarium too. Two massive buildings along the Tennessee river. And my own state has the florida aquarium in tampa.

But georgia aquarium is pretty much all about the whale sharks. (And very awesome at that) And the tide pool display that has waves crashing over you. And a few other things. They even hold all sorts of conventions there. The spectacle and sheer size of their displays are more impressive in that sense. Definitely a different vibe but still a good time like you said.

I had no idea we had an aquarium with whale sharks in it, now I want to go, LOL! Here is Baltimore we have a great aquarium, dolphins are the main attraction, but they also have a giant pacific octopus. Unfortunately, these days it always seems to be crowded to the point that it's not that fun. I've also been to the aquarium in Chicago which was very fun. It's been about 15 years ago, but if memory serves, they had beluga whales. Believe it or not, I love going to the aquarium in Manteo NC. I know it's small, but it doesn't cost an arm and a leg to get in and unless your going on a weekend, it's not crowded and it's a very relaxing experience. Anyway, I hope you had a good time

@sittinglynx I think I've been to the Baltimore aquarium. I remember it somewhat fondly too. There was some bicycle type paddle boats outside I think.

Edit: oh wait, it was called national aquarium.

You need to see one (or all) of the NC Aquariums. I work at one of them, so I am a little bias, but they are fantastic, nonetheless. They are small; not big and flashy like the Georgia or Monterey Bay Aquariums. Their focus on education and sustainability, and their primary theming of NC environments (Mountains to the Sea) make them worth visiting. I love almost all public Aquariums, but the NC ones definitely have a unique vibe to them.

The Charleston Aquarium is pretty great too!

I'm from Chattanooga, but I love our Tennessee Aquarium! If you go in during a weekday, crowds are minimal and I like the flow a lot better than the Georgia Aquarium.
