Whats the verdict on using crystals and gemstones for hardscaping?

I have done some shallow research on crystals in aquariums.
I understand some are dangerous or can break down in water.

Wondering if anyone has any experience with quartz and geodes..?

I used some Quartz, They eventually became algae magnets. Not worth the trouble and it looked out of place in the aquarium with algae on it. Cleaning the crystals once they were permanently removed was also a pain. This was my experience... It depends on the crystal and what you are trying to achieve.

My Plan was crystals on sand with a black background and crystal clear water. To make it appear almost like fish were floating in thin air. I could maintain this only for a few days using seachem puragen, resins(to remove hardness) and additives to scrub the water and make it appear crystal clear, too much work. So I quickly dropped the idea and rescaped the tank.

That sounds about like what I have in my head! Well, glad to hear about your experience. I really liked the idea of translucence and crystal clear water too.
Will probably stick with my river stones then. Thanks!

Now might be a time to ask how much you want them ---or not.
One experience does not mean it is the same answer for others as all tanks and all water may have different results. I consider quartz as very close to inert and might favor going with a try if I really wanted it.
I'm never too far from trying things to see how it works for me as I so often find different results than I might read about. I've screwed up so many tanks that one more is not a big thing at all but then I get some which really do please me while on the trip!
If it were a full carat diamond, I might not risk it but just a cheap quartz, why not?
