First high tech

Starting a high tech tank for the first time, journal to keep track of things. Have almost everything, should be receiving rocks, manzanita, and BML light this coming week! Can't wait!

Tank: ADA 60P
Light: BML Dutch Original series
CO2: Green Leaf Aquariums setup and atomic diffuser
Substrate: Two bags ADA Aquasoil Amazonia
Ferts: EI fert package through GLA
Heater: Hydor 200W Inline External
Filter: Eheim Classic 350 (2215)

Using remineralized RODI water. Not really sure on style or plants yet, but I definitely want a nice carpet of HC. Hoping for a large variety of plants.

Fauna will be shrimp and not sure on fish yet.

Here's just a couple pics to get it started

When I first got the tank and substrate!

Leak testing

Once I get the rest of my stuff next week, I will be posting some pictures of the potential hardscapes. Looking forward to input!

Some potential scapes...

Plan is to have a carpet of HC in front of the rocks, then put various other stem plants in amongst the wood. I'm still not completely sure that I won't just leave out the wood and make it all plants...but we shall see.

Thoughts??

Open to changes, I have a bunch of other pieces that are smaller and more intricate like the front piece on number 1.

I like the fourth one, my eyes arent drawn to one specific spot, rather I see it as a whole.

like the first one too, maybe move the little twigs that has more to the left so they come towards you for depth?

I like the ones with the smaller pieces. They have more dimension. If you are going to go with just the bigger wood, maybe twist them a little so they are not only on one visual plane? Just thinking out loud here >.<

Dry Start in progress!

Hoping this HC takes off like crazy and carpets like mad. I had changed the rocks around more to attempt to make things look more natural. Not sure how well I succeeded, but that's what I ended up with. The wood is soaking currently.

For the rest of my plant list, so far I am thinking.
Staurogyne repens
Alternanthera Reineckii 'mini'
Pogostemnon Erectus
Pogostemnon helferi
Rotala macrandra
Ammania bonsai

who knows what else.

So, I finally flooded this thing, and my adventure into high tech has begun! My carpet didn't really spread much in the month it had to grow, but it's rooted well, so I'll take it. Also, my wife's grandpa is making an L for my desk, which is where this tank will be...but this is taking forever, so I just stuck it on a random piece of furniture from the porch! (woohoo impatience) Anyway, the setup went ok, due to the height of the current stand, my hoses are longer than necessary and tend to try to kink, but it's working. Also, thought I broke my regulator from GreenLeaf initially, but it's working today, so I guess we are good...

Anyway, here's the full tank shot!

Pardon, the diffuser being in the middle of everything, going to move that over during tomorrow's water change. As you can also probably tell, I ended up removing a lot of rocks and driftwood because I didn't like how much it restricted the number of plants I could fit. I also ordered too much AR mini, so it's kind of everywhere right now. But anyway, plant list thus far is...

HC 'cuba'
S. repens
AR 'mini'
Ammania bonsai
Bucephalandra purple-blue
Bucephalandra hades (yay free samples)
Pogo helferi is on the way

I am planning on getting some Fissidens Fontanus and gluing it to the three rocks on the right. Also, taking votes for what to put in the back left corner. My two favorites right now are Ludwigia arcuata and Rotala wallichii. But, I am open to any other suggestions! Hope you guys like it, can't wait for things to start growing!

Got my Pogo helferi in there now too, and they sent a free cup of t/c, so I had way more than I wanted...so it's packed now, minus the back left corner which is waiting for ludwigia arcuata

So it's been about ten days or so, and I now have everything in the tank. It feels like it never changes, but looking back at the original pictures you can really tell how things are taking off...super excited for all this! Can't wait to trim things and pack the plants close together! I am operating at 50% power on my lights, cranked co2, and half EI dosing right now. I will up this starting next week since the plants are establishing fairly well. Hope you guys like it!

Current plant list:
Ludwigia arcuata
Ammania bonsai
Pogostemon helferi
Alternanthera reineckii mini
Bucephalandra purple blue
Buce hades
Staurogyne repens
Hemianthus callictrichoides cuba (Dwarf baby tears)
Fissidens Fontanus
Proserpinaca palustris ( I think that's what it is, got it from LFS a long time ago and had it in a low tech and it wasn't doing great, so put it in the high tech)

Pardon the stainless steel, some of the Fissidens stuck to it, so I figured I would see if it will grow.

You seem to be doing everything right. Now hurry up and grow dammit!

Love the Ammania Bonsai. Such an attractive little plant. Think it'll look good there next to the AR mini.

I'd hold off on upping the nutrient levels for a while. The soil may still be leaching a little, plus it's no way near grown in yet. Have you tested N, P or Fe recently?

Thank you! I also love the Ammania, it's one of my favorites. I don't have tests for P or Fe. I have the api master kit, and gh and kh, otherwise I'm just going blind lol

I'm sure I will end up moving things around, but I am just letting it establish for now, once they are holding onto things better I will try to make things thicker and more lush looking. Might also move the AR mini forward and put something taller behind it....we shall see.

Looks great so far!

Why did you remove the branches? it looks good now, but also with them included.

One thing I have noticed is the more spread out you can plant a small carpeting plant to begin with, the faster you will achieve a carpet.

Looking forward to updates!

Ok cool. What's your nitrate reading just before a water change? This will give a ballpark estimation of whether your nitrates are building too much between water changes. This can guide your entire dosing regimen: If nitrate is building too high, chances are the other nutrients are also........ although nitrate can also build through nitrification so it's a general guide, as I said.

I used to live dangerously and mostly fly blind without testing. It lead to mixed results. Now I check in occasionally to see how things are going with much greater success. Once you're on a winning formula just maintain and test every couple of months, it's really easy and rewarding to see that you're on the right track.
