Fornstar's High Tech 5g Nano

I am new to the high tech planted aquariums. I just tore this one down because of algae. I tried my hand at an Iwugami-esque scape. Everything HC and DHG grew in nice and thick but found the layout pretty boring. The algae didn't help. Did everything I could to get to rid the algae. Got tired of it and tore it down.

Equipment

Tank: Fluval Spec V
Filter: Stock
Light: 20" Finnex Planted+
Substrate: Flourite Black Sand
Ferts: Will be dosing GLA PPS-Pro, 4.5 grams of Osmocote+ under substrate, will be adding DIY root tabs as necessary.
CO2: 10lbs pressurized with dual regulator and solenoid.

Flora
Rotala Wallichill
Pogostemon Erectus
Blyxa Japonica
Alternanthera reineckii 'Mini'
Eleocharis Belem (Dwarf Hair Grass Belem)
Java Moss

Fauna:
The plan so far is
Chili Rasboras
Shrimps

Here is the hardscape that I think i have decided on:

Water is a little cloudy from flooding it. I didnt rinse the substrate.

Headed out today to pick up some plants. Not sure on the plant list yet. There's a great LFS in Seattle that specializes in planted tanks. I do want some red for sure. Probably AR mini coming down the two slopes. Maybe some Blyxa around the base of the DW. There will be moss( not sure which kind ) on the DW. Would like the moss to attach and kind of droop down toward the bottom.

Ok, just figured I should ask before blurting out suggestions... So to to my eye the driftwood looks a little out of place with that rock... Maybe a more intriguing lookin driftwood would look more natural since the rock is very intricate (for a lack of a better word).. Maybe something like manzanita? Or instead of that maybe see what it would look like removing the driftwood and building up the rock to get more vertical? Just a thought.

I agree with you that the wood seems a little out of place. I have a picture in my head, and I'm hoping that once it's all grown in it will tie together.

Plus I don't have anymore rocks or wood. My wife doesn't find any interest in the hobby so that means my play funds are limited. That and we are trying to buy a house soon.

Planted

I kept the hardscape the way it was. No choice really. I update the first post with the plant list.

Still a cloudy and a ton of air bubbles but here is a shot.

Banking on the Rotala Wallichii and Pogostemon erectus thinken up.

I tried using the super glue method for the moss. I'm not real fond of my execution. I put very little moss around the tank. I really just want the moss to do what ever it wants.

I am also hoping that the Rotala Wallichii colors up nicely.

I am looking forward to watch everything fill in.

On a side not, any photographers have some tips for tank shots? I am going to use this thread as an excuse to learn to use my wifes camera. Nikon D7000.

I am going to be working on dialing in the CO2 today. I do have a question.

How long of a photoperiod should I start with? I was thinking 6 hours to start and adjust from there.

Is it just me or no images showing up?

Ok. I switched my hosting to photobucket to see if that helps. I am hoping this works. I have had this issue on other threads. Was hosting at Google, but lets see if this works.

Got some white film on my driftwood. I did boil this for a couple hours. Whatever, it will go away.
