40G: Heart of the Wood

Hey fishy folks!

After a summer of neglect on my 40gal, it was about time for a new scape. Plants were all leggy, algae had crept in, and I had some new petrified wood that I wanted to find a place for.

I'm pretty happy with the hardscape I came up with, kinda captures an ancient hollow in some dark forest. Plan is to grow willow moss and fissidens over the wood with hydrocotyle spread out on either side. Maybe get a little Hygrophila pinnatifida in there for some texture.

Sorry about the dirty glass in my pics!

I like that very much. What are you planning to do with the center area?

Glad you like it!

I think I'll leave the center as a pathway into the cave. Maybe edge it with something small like a few sprigs of hairgrass or moss.

40gal has cleared up a bit after planting. That forked piece of wood is still buoyant, so it's at an odd position for now.

Plantwise, it looks a little sparse, but I'm sure it will fill in fast. My lfs was having a sale so I picked up a sizeable pot of hairgrass(E. parvulus) for the foreground. Cardamine lyrata and Bronze/brown crypt wendtii for midground/background. The H. pinnatifida is transitioning to submersed, hopefully this batch will survive!

Might run into an issue cleaning the glass where the wood touches it on the right.
Wendtii Bronze eventually gets 6-7" diameter and 7-8" tall. Should "fit" a 40B however.
Should be interesting to watch it grow in.

Tank is chugging along slowly as planned. The H. Pinnatifida is doing well and the bronze crypts are loving the deep substrate with root tabs. C. Lyrata has just about died out, not too sure why, but I'm not too upset.

Hairgrass growth:

Moss and Pinnatifida

Tank is going through some sort of bacterial bloom, hence the fogginess. Pretty sure it will calm down soon.

Been a month, time for some updates!
Here's a look at the tank not the best pic and tannins have built up, but some new stuff: added lilies and potamogeton gayi to either side, big ball of fiss is sitting in there before I glue it to the wood. Also decided on some fish - I'm gonna put a sizeable group of sparkling gouramis in here, 10 or 12. Should be fun to watch!

I'm thinking I might swap out the hairgrass for dwarf sag. The hairgrass has been doing well for me, but in the end I'm not a huge fan of how it looks with the scape. I'd rather have it in my 10" cube and move the sag from there over.
