Floaties from dirt

Easy way to get floating pieces out if the bowl easily is to overfill it with water until all the floaties are gone from the dirt. Do it over a dish so easy clean up.

New animals

I cut the wood so it can lay at the bottom. The plants are growing very well. There are new shoots on the wisteria and bacopa growing taller. I put a snail in 2 days ago from my filter. It has already grown and looking healthy. I did not test the water, but it has smelled of ammonia for about a week. In the meantime, I did a water change every other day.

The ammonia smell went away (about a week ago?) and smells like a lake now, which means it is ready.

There is lots of gsa and staghorn algae. But not *too* much

Today I got some blue shrimp which I acclimated for a little bit, then added to the bowl.
They are very hungry and eating the algae.

Post pics once I get a light.

Oh yeah, added a big duckweed plant in the bowl. It came with a bag of ghost shrimp.

"Reality check"

Shrimp are doing well, water wisteria growing new shoots. Everything else is growing.
Took the fat snail out and fed it to my loaches. I found some snail eggs that I also fed to my loaches. I don't know how many eggs I did not find.

I see no eggs from my only female shrimp. Yes, the guy gave us 1 female!! 4 males running all around.
I tried to take out the draceana brauni because it is a bit short for my bowl. I tugged and stopped because the roots were spread in the dirt. Oh well!

Bump: Oh yeah, finding the blue shrimp amongst the colored gravel is like where's waldo?? The blue version? I am thinking what colors would be a great contrast for blue shrimp in terms of plants, and then realized that is why ppl love rcs because green+red contrast! So maybe yellow or orange plants! As if.

Not much has changed. I did realize I got juvenile blue shrimp because they are larger now. I took out the draceana braunni pretty easily. I didn't stir up any dirt, too! I thought it was very rooted. There are new shoots growing everywhere. The big duckweed is growing verrryyy slow. I have 1 plant that grew into another. So that is what I have. The shrimp seem well. I feed them homemade veggie flakes. They eat it right up. What I think i may do if I ever get the courage to rehome my male mollies is make my 10 gal nursery into a shrimp tank! I never thought I might consider that!!! Maybe I can keep sprinkle who is my very small deformed molly. He was born that way and I never could have the heart to cull him. Maybe I should just stop now. This journal is way too fun.

The journal can never be too much fun, fun is good! And good luck with stopping. Your bowl is growing in nicely

The wisteria grew out of the water. I just let it grow. I already have a bunch of side shoots. The shrimp are good and growing and molting. The female is always getting chased, but no eggs!!

I am feeding them my all purpose fish flakes:
1 handful of spinach
1 handful red lentils
Some shelled peas
Garlic
Other veggies like pumpkin, squash, etc

Cook it in a splash of watee till lentils soft. Put it all in a blender and then pour liquid onto a large baking sheet lined with wax or parchment paper and put in oven at lowest setting
150-200 degrees F

Till dried out completely

Will come out as big sheets. Just crumble and put in jar or plastic bag.

Next! On a somewhat unrelated topic, I rehomed most of my mollies around 20.
So that is 1 step closer to my 10 gallon to be shrimp tank maybe. My son wanted to keep 3 males, so they are in the 10g and sprinkle the deformed molly.

Crazy idea. Trim my bowl plants. Rinse the outside of the bowl. Place bowl inside a large aquarium before filling with water. Might just do it!

Thanks Daisy Mae! You are very inspiring! As well as other bowl keeping members. I finally found out how to use the new site.

Bump: Shrimp eating

So... I felt the demise of this bowl was going to happen. It went bad today when 2 male shrimp died! I know what happened. Do I feel like a failure? No. There is always room for improvement. Though, with 1/2 gallon there is not a lot of room for error.
What I did do though took me one step closer to my 10 gallon shrimp tank dreAm. I moved the last 3 shrimp in a cup to my 10 gallon. So happy everybody was. In my 20, my fish were happy to eat the dead shrimp. Very happy. My fat balloon molly chomped half a shrimp before it reached the bottom. I changed out a bunch of water in my bowl and that is what it will be a bowl with plants. Too hard to maintain h2o chemistry.

Done

I have to change this journal to all my tanks. My 10 gallon is now a shrimp tank! I added 5 red cherry females yesterday. They are ok. They eat the food I give them. I now have 2 male blue shrimp left only. I am not sure what happened with my only female. I guess amolting complication.
