SubWolf's 14 gallon aquarium journal

I am new to the forums but I thought I would share my latest project. I am currently in the process of cycling my new 14 gallon tank and plan on turning into a fully planted shrimp tank. I have been at the hobby for only a couple years, but my wife has had tanks and been a fish fanatic for ever, and most of our tanks are a joint effort.

The tank is nothing special, a 14 gallon cheap Wal-Mart find. The filtration and lighting is handled by an Eclipse1 TL (twin lamp) that I found on clearance at a local pet supply shop (I guess the twin lamp models have been discontinued?). I am using a ATI FilterMax1 pre-filter to keep the shrimp safe (and make cleaning up floating plant bits easier). The heater is a Marineland Stealth 75W, but as soon as I can find something less obtrusive I will be switching it out. (Any Suggestions?)

As for the aquascaping it is still in the planning stage. I wanted to go with the Flourite black sand but could not find it anywhere locally, and shipping to Alaska is cost prohibitive. I ended up finding a product called Activ-Flora in black and am using that instead. I have no previous experience with this product as I have used either Flourite (messy) or RedSea Flora-Base (boring) in the past. The background is a Back To Nature slimline 3D background in white limestone, after scouring the Internet for days I managed to find a company in Europe that would ship them to the US cheaply.

Well that's all I have at the moment as I patiently cycle the tank and plan the next steps and what plants I am going to go with. Any comments and suggestions would be greatly appreciated, especially if you can recommend plants, give me aquascaping ideas, etc.

That background looks pretty good. How hard is it to find shrimp in Alaska?

You can find ghost shrimp and occasionally RCS but that's about it. We don't have any Aquarium stores up here anymore, just PetZoo and PetCo. I will probably pick them up off Aquabid.com as I have had very good luck so far getting fish and plants from there.
