Jeepn4x4's 20 gal long journal

Hello all,

This is my first journal attempt so bear with me. I am in the process of setting up my 20 gallon as a planted tank. I have other tanks with plants but I don't pay a lot of attention to the plants. I currently have 6 aquariums which are 180 gal African Cichlid tank, 75 gal community with plants, 3 10 gal tanks, and of course this 20 long. I plan on keeping this tank pretty low tech. Here are the specs on the tank:

20 gallon long
Coralife F/W T-5 Aqualight 36 watts with 1 6700 bulb and 1 colormax bulb
Rena XP2 filter
100 watt sub heater
Flourite black with some 3m colorquartz sand underneath in a few spots
mazanita driftwood
rocks from Craigthor

Plants:
anubias
downoi
rotala rotundifolia
dwarf hairgrass
java fern
taiwan moss
xmas moss
cryptocoryne wendtii red
rotala indica
egeri najas
myriophyllum tuberculatum
riccia tyed to stones
I may not use all of these plants. And I am sure I will be adding others.

I will be dosing dry ferts. I will be using the PPS-Pro solutions recipe. Dosing both micros and macros. Thanks to Orlando from GLA. What a great help he has been.

Fish could be any of the following: Celestial Pearl Danios, Microrasabora Kubotai, Otos, Boraras Brigittae, Furcata Rainbows, and Choprae Danios. All of which I already have except the ottos. I will also house some rcs or other species of shrimp.

I will of course be adding pics as I go. Please fell free to give suggestions or advice. I am open to all ideas.

I am tying the moss to the manzanita wood and the ricca to stones. Here are a few pics of the progress so far. Let me know what you think of the hardscape.

Just took a FTS. I put a few plants in such as downoi on the right and rotala rotundifolia on the left. Still waiting for an order from aqua botanic. Its been a week and they still have not shipped. Anyone bought from them before?

You're off to a great start so far. The 20 gallon longs are really nice tanks (maybe my favorite size besides a 40 breeder I've always wanted ). I really like the look of your driftwood and I have that light myself you're using and it's definitely a nice fixture. If you do use the PPS-Pro system, I'll have to keep a lookout here to see how it works. I've been thinking about switching to it myself from EI (50% weekly water changes aren't fun without something semi-automated)

Thanks for the kind words. I've never been really good keeping up with water changes. This is one big factor in trying the PPS-Pro system. I plan on changing out the colormax bulb for either another 6700 or a 10k. Which do you think would be a better choice? There is one 6700 in the fixture now.

replace it with a 10000K. it will get rid of the green tinge that you get with just 6700K

I'll have to do some more research into PPS-Pro. Sounds like a good system anyway. Less water changes = happier me! And like you, I have to admit, I've been pretty lax on the water changes.

Personally I'd go with the 10k bulb. I think the 6700/10k mix looks pretty good. In my experience, the 6700k bulbs kind of have a red/yellow tint to them, but the 10k bulbs are more blue. I've been mixing them in all of my tanks (I use PC bulbs, but I use the 50/50 10k/6700 bulbs) and I really like the color.

I keep the colormax and replace the 67k. I have a 11k/pink (colormax) combo on my current fixture and the color of plants and fish comes out better without the yellow water look. The water looks crystal clear. But I would not jump and replace the bulbs immediately the 67k/colormax combo is actually a good one give it some time.BTW good start the wood looks great. May I suggest you flatten the front of the substrate b/c wavey substrate distract from the scape. I talk to some at aquabotonic yesterday and he said they are really behind your order will probably ship monday I placed my ordeer yesterday and he said it would go out by Wednesday.

Thanks for the comments. Hey marimoball thanks for the heads up on aqua botanic. Figured something must be up. Really want to keep moving on the tank but have to wait for the plants from aqua botanic.

I do enjoy 4wding but I have recently sold my jeep. There is definitely another in the near future.

Time for a little update. I have added 6 Otto's and 6 CPD's so far. I am looking to buy another 12 CPD's if anyome knows someone selling them. The plants are in. Could not get hairgrass except for a 1x1 piece that came as a freebie. I am using Marsilea Minuta for the foreground. I have some rocks in there with riccia tied to them. They are probably just temporary till I finish my 75. Anyways let me know what you think.

Currently in the 75. That is going thru an overhaul very soon. Maybe this weekend. I may actually add some sag to the 20. That was a large amount you sent me.
