Brian's 36g BF tank

Decided to start my tank journal. I used to always play on car forums, but since I had my last car totaled, I decided to take a break from cars and play around with a tank. I used to have a 29 gallon Eclipse tank about 10 years ago, but got rid of it when I moved out to college. Always wanted one since. For Christmas my girlfriend got me a tank and stand off craigslist. Had pink rocks and a HOB filter. Fake plants. All I really wanted was the tank and stand anyway (a very nice stand, not one of the cheap flimsy ones).

Now for my set up, once I got the tank I tossed the pink rocks, got rid of the T8 single light and fake plants.

Tank now has:
-Fluval 306 canister filter, black bio foam in bottom, bio rings in middle, polishing pad in top with one side Fluval zero carb, and one side Purigen.
-HOB Mainland Penguin 200 filter with standard filter
-Aqueon 06109 Pro Heaters Submersible Aquarium Heater
-Fluval LED Daylight/Plant Lamp
-Eco-complete substrate (60lbs)
-2 pieces of Fluval driftwood
I am not good with fish and plant names, so I am just going off the receipts

For fish I have:
-2 Neon tetras
-1 Pristella tetra
-2 Phantom black tetras
-1 Bamboo shrimp
-2 Penguin tetras
-2 Green tiger tetras
-1 Tigar tetra
-3 Neon rainbow dwarfs
-2 Glass catfish
-1 Rainbow shark
-1 Bumble catfish
-2 Rams (not sure what one, receipt says blue but I dont think that is what the lady at the store called them?)
-1 Farlowella catfish

For plants I have:
-1 Wisteria
-1 Anu Barteri (not sure, its what the receipt abbreviates it as?)
-1 Mirco Sward grass
-1 Rotindica (also not sure, its what the receipt abbreviates it as?)
-2 Amazon sward plant
-1 Lud repens (not sure, its what its abbreviated on the receipt)
-2 Val Corkscrew
- A few others, but the recept just says plant so I am not sure what they are

For chemicals I use:
-API stress coat
-Seachem Flurish and Flurish exel
-At one point when the tank was new, I made the mistake of going to Petco and got a fish with Ick, so I used API super Ick treatment, worked great)

Right now its all about 1 1/2 months old, I test the water about every 2 days, it has always been good so far. I also had the water tested at the LFS and they cleared it as well as being nicely balanced and established. I keep the tank at 76-77F plus or minus about 1 degree. I do water changes about once a week now that the tank is set up.

Anyway! Let me know what you think, or if you have any advice on how to better my tank. Like I said I am new to this more advanced tank set ups!

I'm more fish then plants so here it is;
Hoping the "tiger tetras" green/and regular AREN'T tiger barbs they are not good community fish and best in species only tanks(some have had luck).
The ram is a "German Blue Ram" Mikrogeophagus ramirezi.
Since your water is "good" see how it plays out but all of the tetras would have preferred to have more of their own.
Your tank looks good!

Not a very good stocking.

Your tetras all prefer groups of at least 5+ and same for the glass catfish and rainbowfish

I went to my local fish store (specility fish store, not just a pet store) and got the fish they said would go together ok. All the teras actually seem to hang together, even though they are different kinds. We will see how it plays out I guess!

So upon further investigation, I desicovered there is no such thing as tiger tetras, they are tiger barbs :-(. My question though, is they are not picking on the other fish, they are picking on eachother. Does anyone know if this is them playing ot fighting?

Your fish store doesn't seem very knowledgeable. The barbs are not good community fish as already mentioned by Coralbandit, and they will fight each other if there aren't enough of them. Does your store take returns? If so, I would either:
A) Get rid of the barbs and a few tetras and get 5+ of only two of the species of tetras
or
B) Get rid of the tetras and rams and get more tiger barbs.

I don't know much about the rams, shark, catfish, or rainbows so hopefully someone can chip in on those and correct me if I'm wrong.

I really like the other fish, and they don't seem to have any issues with eachother, so I think I will get rid of the barbs and grow the tera community. I will prob get a few more neon tetras, and a few more of some other tetra I don't know the name of

Well, brought back the rainbow shark, bumblebee catfish and the barbs. Worked with the owner of the store today, he was much more knowledgable and apoligised for the girl selling me the fish combo she did. Got a few more tetras of the ones I already have, 2 bottom feeders, 2 cool algae esters and 3 african frogs. I'll post pics tomorrow.

Hey man, great setup you have there. Reminds me of when I first started so many years ago.

Your plants seem to be doing ok with what you have. You might notice they "fade" overtime, and if that happens come on here with new pics and we'll figure it out.

Have fun!

PS. Tigar barbs can be nasty, but sometimes they are peaceful. I've had them in many tanks over the years and as long as they aren't actively chasing and chewing on the fins of other fish they are probably fine. I wouldn't buy anymore, though as they might become more aggressive in a larger school (although the opposite can happen too hahaha).

Fish seem much happier since I got the more aggressive fish out. Even my Bamboo shrimp comes out more to feed! My daughter really liked the Frogs at the store, so I got 3 African frogs. Since I got rid of the 2 bottom feeders, I got 3 cory catfish that the LFS said would be really good in my tank. I also got a long (maybe 2") eel looking thing, forgot the name of, but its a bottom feeder. Girl friend wanted a Beta, so I got one of those, they said with my fish I have now, that it would be ok. I got rid of the Marineland Penguin HOB filter, and swapped it out for a Fluval AquaClear. On sale at Petsmart for $33 right now! Tank seems to be doing well!

Good deal on the barbs!
Keep an eye on the betta ,they all have different personalities.
It could go 3 ways with him; he is fine, he attacks certain/all other fish,or even another fish will pick on him.
The rummy nose are great fish considered one of tightest "schooling" fish.
Stay on top of your water!

Looking better.

I would be careful with the betta as well. Keep a close eye on it. I have seen bettas do fine in community tanks, and seen it go bad as well.

That is a nice False Julii cory. But they REALLY do prefer to be in groups of 3 or 4, if not more. I have 3 now, hoping to get a 4th soon. I have read four really is the min, and they may not show it but they get really stressed if not in groups. They are really impressive to see school together. Especially pygmys.

What town Petsmart did you go to?

I habe 3 of the corys. They are very active and social! Haha.

I got some of my tank supplies on sale at the petsmart/petco in hillsboro, or. The fish are from specility fish store called the World of wet pets.

I am getting rid of the 6 other boring petco style fish thay were in the tank when I bought it tonight. Trying one of the higher spoken of fish stores called The Wet Spot. Gunna donate the old fish I don't like. Wanna get a few unique ones, anyone got any suggestions? I know I cant post links to the site, bit they have a list of hundreds of the fish they have in stock.

If your intrested in the list and have any suggestions it's wetspottropicalfish.com.

Not super happy with the aquascaping I have going I ordered some Malaysian Driftwood, I ordered a large piece, and a medium piece, I also have a piece of spider wood coming. Last night I got my black lava rock. I figure with all that, I can make something cool. I also have the driftwood thats in the tank currently, but as of now that may come out. Anyone got a suggestion? I want more of a natural look. I am going to put some moss on the wood as well I think.

Anyone, I made a little shelf under my stand to have some more usable space. Works great.
