DataLifePlus' 55-gallon revamp

Okay, so this was my first attempt at a planted tank.

Don't laugh. Here's what I'm currently doing to fix this tank up.

I've upgraded the bulbs. I now have two 55w T5's timed for 10-hours a day.

That was easy, but the next part will be a little tougher. I'm replacing the plastic coated gravel with a mineralized topsoil substrate capped with black sand.

I'm currently in the rinse-repeat stages of the topsoil preparation.

I'm also looking to add pressurized CO2. I'm still trying to decide which regulator and diffusion method to go with. Input on this is appreciated.

Also looking at changing out the Penguin filters on the back for a canister filter, but I'm not sure which kind yet.

I'll keep you all updated with photos throughout the process.

Small update...

Rinsed topsoil drying in the sun

Some rinsed flourite I intend to add to the topsoil drying on a screener I made from an old picture frame and window screen

The black sand I will use to cap the topsoil

Some rocks to scape the new tank with

That's it for now. It's a slow process. I've ordered a lot of new equipment and will update when I install it.

Any comments are welcome and appreciated.

Aloha,
James.

sup james, nice rocks, i think u should go with a 5 lb tank, and a nice glass diffuser, also i would recommend the marineland c series canisters because they are nice and esy to start up (prime button) and i also love the 4 separate media baskets. flourite does work great, u could also use ada aquasoil, just lmk if u need help, i might have some plant trimmings and whutnot for u

Thanks man. Borrowed the rocks from a friends garden.

And thanks for the plant offering. What kind of trimmings might you have? I'll let you know when I'm ready to plant.

I'm definitely going with a 5-pounder. Where's a good place to buy a tank locally? Gaspro?

Still waiting on equipment to arrive. Will update when I receive and set it up.
