Office tank setup

So I started this tank back on October 4th. That entire month I had brownish water that looks like I'm brewing tea. Every time I did a water weekly water change of 50% or 90% it improved, but the next couple of days the tea color came back.

I tried using matrix carbon, but that only made the water improve slightly. Next I tried purigen and that improved a little more. It still looked like tea, only watered down. All this time I did a fish less cycle, and did not add any plants. Only ohko stones and ADA Aqua soil were in the tank. I was getting extremely frustrated.

Then last weekend I decided the tank was ready for some life, and got some live plants and shrimp locally. By the way, many thanks to Iamiskool for the perfect Blyxa and Downoi. The red cherry shrimp look great too! He gave me extras of everything... great guy! His tanks look amazing too!

So last Saturday I setup the plants and while trimming and planting I acclimated the shrimp. On Sunday I checked on the tank and the water was still brown and cloudy from planting. Today, when I went into the office I couldn't believe it... the tank was free of tannins and the water is a bit clearer. Here are some pics!

Can I put tetras or rasboras in a tank with shrimps?

Thanks NotCousteau. The rocks are Ohko stone. Got 3 pieces in there.

Sad day... found 2 shrimps dead today. I'm nt sure why, but I noticed most of the shrimp were either hiding or sitting still. Occasionally I would see one swimming in the open, but most of today they were hiding in the plants.

Only until after the lights went out they started to come out. I'm not sure what's going on.

I dose excel daily following the instructions on the back of the bottle. Is it too much?

How many shrimp total did you put in? While neos are generally regarded as being pretty tough, they still may simply have been weakened and stressed from the move. Don't worry - give it a few months, and you'll have more than you can count.

As for your fish question, I would lean toward rasboras if you're concerned about the shrimp population. Rasboras TEND to be less predatory than tetras. You'd be just fine with smaller tetras, though (cardinal, neon).

Water looks good. Ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate all 0.

It may have been stress from the move. The shrimps were in the tank for 5 days. Today, I put a quarter piece of an algae wafer and it was bombarded with shrimp and the nerite sat on it too. The shrimp could not get to it!

Also found a couple of white curled up shells in the corner. Not sure, maybe they ate each other? Used to have 20 shrimp, but I can only count 16 or 17. It's really hard with the plants to see them all at once.

Shrimps seemed more active today. Saw them swimming about and picking away at the Aqua soil or plant leaves.

So will the blue shrimps ever cross breed with the red cherries?
