20L: Tree Scape (Update soon 11/26)

Having gotten rid of my big tanks, my focus is now on my 20L. My goals for this tank are to have a successful high tech tank, since my low techs have been doing fine through a lot of neglect. I haven't had any real success yet in the high tech arena, and I've finally got all my equipment in working order.

I'm going to be attempting a moss tree. These appear to be difficult to get right, as I have seen a lot of them end up looking very messy. I am tentatively naming the tank 'Tire Swing' because the tree is situated over a sand river, and reminds me of places I used to go swimming in the summer.

The specs:

Equipment:
Tank: AGA 20 gallon long
Filter: Eheim 2215
CO2: 10lb tank with Rex Regulator and inline reactor
Light: Coralife 1x65W (Soon will be 2x65W run on noon burst)

Hardscape:
Tuffa Rock (I think? It passed the vinegar test.)
Manzanita "Nano Tree"

Substrate:
This is a messy one. Several types of substrate are in this tank due to
my indecisiveness and cheapness. The bottom layer is SMS Charcoal.
This is capped with a layer of Eco-complete, since SMS blows around the
the tank when a shrimp farts. Finally, there is some Aquasoil in the mix
that came with my HC.

Plants:
HC
Dwarf Hairgrass
Java Fern 'Trident' (?)
Java Fern 'Philippine'
Fissidens Fontanus
Taiwan Moss
Hygrophila 'Porto Vehlo' (pending)
Blyxa Japonica (pending)

Fish:
Ember Tetras
Boraras Merah
Scarlet Badis
Pygmy Cories
RCS

Here are some pics of the tank while it was still emersed:

The tank has since been filled, I will update when I get more time.

looks really good, and good luck with the moss tree.

This is the best quote I've heard in a while! LMAO

You should try and make a "tire swing" to hang from the tree. It could be a simple black washer or something similar hung with a thick enough thread or wire so we could actually see it. A string would be best so the current would actually move it, as if the wind was blowing.

Yeah, a mini tire swing would be sweet. I'm thinking a model car tire or the like, and maybe some very small gauge chain from a hardware store.

You could always try for a moss covered ring for the swing. (I think it was Spypet that was growing moss ropes and rings?)

Looks good so far.

I wish the tank were rimless, since the tree extends slightly above the water line, and the ugly black rim obscures the view.

i like the setup, and as far as the equipment goes, its perfect. i have the same lighting, filter, and reactor setup on my 20L.
second, i like the idea (well im not to crazy about sand rivers in general, but thats just me), and i really hope the tree comes out nice.
i would reccomend some stems though, they really help out a lot with algae.

I've got some hygro polysperma and stargrass in there right now, but if they get too rowdy, I might have to pull them out.

So, a little update. The HC has mostly come and gone, since I didn't get that eco-complete cap on there fast enough. There are some surviving patches that browned and then greened again. I will be trying after Thanksgiving with regular submersed grown HC. It grew a lot faster for me that way. The fissidens looked like it mostly bit the dust due to a little too much Excel. I will try it again after Thanksgiving as well. The tree looks kind of like a tree, though, with taiwan moss in its place. Dwarf hairgrass is spreading likme a weed, and there are patches of stargrass, rotala 'green', rotala rotund', purple bamboo, and blyxa. I also like my small patch of hygro 'porto vehlo' that's been growing nicely. The tank has a lot of fish in it; some might say overstocked, but I don't think so.

11 ember tetras
19 (?) celestial pearl danios
10 (?) pygmy cories

I have question marks on those last two because they are hard to count, and I don't think I caught them all from my QT tank. There are also a lot of RCS in there. They look like birds in the moss tree.
