Unhappy Epic failure (or what not to do with an Eclipse System Six 6-gallon)

Step 1: Replant your Ecliipse System Six 6-gallon aquarium.

Step 2: Decide that 8W isn't enough light and purchase a 28W CF retrofit enclosure from www.hellolights.com:

Step 3: Watch your tank climb to 79F (26C), watch your corkscrew val twist and burn, and watch as plants produce so much oxygen that they bubble like airstones.

Step 4: Wait a week and end up with a disgusting mess.

Let me guess: No CO2 or nutrients were added? That's the problem right there.

I doubt the vals were burning from the light. More likely a deficiency, like Nitrogen or Iron.

CO2 is between 20-25 ppm. (That's a DIY reactor over on the left. It was unplugged at the time I took the picture because I was about to fix it.)

I've been adding a tiny bit of Flourish regular about twice a week. When I tried adding a little nitrogen, the shrimp freaked out and I performed an emergency water change.

Standard advice: Clean off as much algae as you can manually, reduce your photo period, get your co2 up to 30ppm consistently, and feed your plants the nutrients they are missing.

Nitrates around 10ppm don't bother shrimp.

THat isn't from the lights or temp. That is a nutrient problem. You can't increase one paramater and not change all of the others.

Hmmmmm, I retro fitted the home depot 27w compact flourescent into my 5 gal hex and nothing really happened except for a slight increase in heat.

Is it a spiral compact? A 27w spiral compact is probably 1/2 or less the light of a 28W CF retrofit with a decent reflector.
