ringram's - ADA 60P tank journal

This will be a setup & update journal for my new tank - an ADA 60P cube garden tank. I picked it up at Aqua Forest today, after my club's open house in San Francisco.

Filtration:

Eheim Pro 2222 - Had this filter for 4-5 years now, and it's 110% reliable. Haven't replaced a thing mechanically, but I did buy new o-rings, new feet and new tubing. In addition, I bought some little media bags for temporary or messy media (Carbon, eg).

Substrate:

Aquasoil Amazonia & probably some nile sand or bright sand (obviously with a divider of some sort -- haven't thought that far ahead yet).

Here's a few pictures I took tonight. You'll see that large piece of manzanita --- it's actually a branch from a piece of property that my parent's own not too far away. I let it dry out in the sun for a few months... I'll need to strategically break it up for the tank, so opinions on that are welcome!

I just couldn't resist taking a peek behind the cardboard and styrofoam!

I've never bought an ADA tank before, but looking at it closely (clean seals, very little silicon, no top or bottom rim) puts my other tanks to shame. The 25-T tank in the background is getting torn down and sold, along with the stand and lighting (55wx2).

So...........where are the plants?
Not for a while. I still need several key elements.

I'll eventually be getting the Co2 system, lily pipes, ada beetle or similar, lighting (not sure what I'm getting yet).
Oh yeah.....I still need a stand. Not sure if I'm going to make it, or break down and buy one.

More to come! (hopefully sooner than later)

-Ryan

Congrats on the new goodies!

I need to get down to Aqua Forest someday myself for a visit.

What kind of lighting are you gonna use for this tank?

Not sure about lighting. I can't go too crazy though...
I'm leaning towards T5, but a MH/PC combo is possible. I like T5 because they are plenty intense enough and stay cool. I also thought that moonlights would be neat. I've seen DIY threads on making them out of LED computer lights....

I see. I was gonna go with a 2x 65 watt current usa orbit fixture, but I've seen people do nice ones without such high light intensity, so it'll be a noon burst thing.

Still haven't persuaded my mom yet

Hey bro you better get a better stand then what it's on. JK. It was good to see you again. Enjoy. A note on the manzanita the bark will leach. sand it off or get more with out it.

Hey, ringram and Matthew, it was nice to meet both of you yesterday! Good luck with the tank

Did you find/get a piece of manzanita that you like from the box I brought yesterday?

I already scaped with it. Just secured it with a tie to a flat stone and buried the stone under the substrate, Then put moss on the tie and wound that on with thread. thanks again.

heh, yeah. That was a tv tray that I stuck it on for like 2 minutes to take the picture. It's sitting in the corner of the room with cardboard and styrafoam....waiting patiently for it's owner to make or buy a stand. lol

Yes, thanks for bringing the wood! I stuck mine in my 90g, along with the other wood. The only problem is, I can't get it to sink even with a lead plant weight.
I'm thinking about drilling a couple holes in the bottom and inserting small fishing weights would work....FWIW, I don't believe that fishing weights are made from lead anymore. I think it's steel, so the fish should be ok....right?

EDIT: I see what Matthew did. Maybe I'll try the same with a small slate rock or something...

Nice start Ryan.

Sorry, I didn't hang out longer at the club meeting last weekend to chat face to face. Was getting a little claustrophobic to say the least in Andrews apartment.

Sand blasting the wood would always be an option. Might allow for taking the bark off of the small bits so keeping them intact for your scape. There are plenty of media out there that are not toxic, walnut shells would probably make quick work of that bark.
