Nice tank. Good to see some dirt tanks.
I would go without excel. That would make it more of a budget tank plus more natural. Your filter must be really kicking it up , all though you cannot tell from the photos. Those CFL's are really working out nice for you.
Nice job, keep up the good work. I cant wait to set up my dirted tank.

I'm likely going to have to lose that budget part in the title, I've ordered a hydor 240 GPH pump, and a fugeray 2 ds. I might put the fuge on my 30g rimless conversion project. If I use the fuge on here, I'd have to set up a DIY co2 system.

My fluval isn't doing a great job of eliminating dead spots, so i'm excited to try out the hydor.

Update Finnex DS 2

Using the finnex 24" DS 2

My Finnex DS 2 arrived today, I planned on using this on my rimless but while its not set up at the moment, i'll try it with my 20g and repair its fixture in the mean time.

Front: The Cabomba is unstoppable, definately trimming it tomorrow.

Side: Tons more light, really illuminating some dead spots I hope to eliminate with the Hydor pump.

Top: Fluval 301 needs a change with the trimming tmrw. Might hook up my power filter if i can rig something to prevent the fry from getting sucked in.

To come: Trimming replanting, High quality photos with DSLR camera

Trimming update!

About 5 weeks into this tank, took a portion of the stem plans out and transferred to my 90g holding tank. Algae has been held at bay by the plant growth. Waiting on a replacement power filter for my fluval.

Trim:
I trimmed the DHG(i think thats right) down to 1" and 1 cm in some places.

Front:

Left Side:

Right side:

Close UP:

Fry/Algae:
You can see a bit of deep green hair algae forming on some of the lower water circulated area. 3 Platy fry in shot.

Update

Well this thank has a few issues, its has some direct sunlight from a bad placement idea I had. I was using the finnex fixture but it was providing additional unwanted light. So I retrofitted my old hood added a reflector and started using 2x CFL (15w each 6500K)

I started dosing DIY co2. To try and keep the algae at bay with the sunlight, so far its been working.

DIY co2: Done in a glass Bacardi 1.75L.

Aquarium liking co2:

I want to make an emphasis on getting rid of the algae, which might mean removing some plants and also focusing more on the carpet

UPDATE: Trim, plant removal minor scape change

New Scape:

Removed the Anubis coffefolia, the Quartz rocks, and half of the cabomba. Trimmed dwarf hair grass, hoping to encourage it to carpet.
