Hello fellow planted tank enthusiasts!

Most of you probably don't remember me, as it’s been several years since I’ve frequented this site. To be fair, I’ve browsed it daily for the past several months, mostly just reading and researching.

Several years back, I was involved with SAPS (Sacramento Aquatic Plant Society) and SFBAAPS (San Francisco Bay Area Aquatic Plant Society), as well as a moderator on this site for a short time.


For the past several years, I just had a fish-only African Cichlid setup in my 90g that I sold upon moving and haven't had a tank now for about six months.
It’s been waaaay too long since I set up a tank from scratch, at least requiring this much research, planning and *ehem* monetary investment.

If you look at the 90 gallon journal in my sig, you’ll see that I started that tank in late 2005, so yeah…..it’s been a while ;-)
Needless to say I’m ecstatic over the anticipation of finally getting this going!

I’ll be using a 60-P ADA tank that I bought back in 2008 or so, used it as a shrimp tank for ~6 months and then let it sit in my garage since….thankfully, no cracks or anything – and that’s saying something since I have two kids (2 & 5 yr girls).

Ok, here are the specs for those of you wondering:

60-P ADA
ADA Aquasoil Amazonia (used about 1 9L bags)
ADA Powersand Special-S (2L)
Eheim Pro II 2026
Hydor 200W inline heater
Coralife TurboTwist UV sterilizer (9W)
DIY inline CO2 reactor (made this back around 2006 and still appears to be solid)
10 lb CO2 tank
JBJ Regulator/Needle valve/Bubble counter (used for a good 5 yrs…might look into quality replacement)
Cal Aqua lily pipes
BuildMyLED – 24” “10,000K Planted” w/ ceiling suspension cables
IKEA BESTA cabinet/stand
Seiryu stones


For anyone wondering, for my stand, I wanted something similar to the flat/flush-front ADA style stand, but didn’t want to spend a fortune. I noticed that a lot of folks have used 60-P and similar tanks on it without a problem, so I opted to try it.
Bought two of them for a total of $140 or so and fastened them together.
I ease my own paranoia, I used slightly longer screws in some areas and used carpenter’s/wood glue along all joining seams. I also affixed metal “L” brackets in each of the four corners, plus two “I” brackets (top & bottom) for the middle part where they join.

Below are some pictures of the initial set up and getting things ready.

It's always exciting to get fish tank stuff in the mail.
Especially from ADA/AFA!





Don't mind the mess of tools. Still setting up the workbench :-)

Here's the stand before the tank was on it and before I set up anything underneath:



And here's the tank before putting Aquasoil in. Notice the slight elevation of the plastic grating. I put the "hill" in the approximate spot that I want the actual hill, so hopefully it helps slow down erosion:




The underside of the stand is all hooked up now and ready to go. I also have the hardscape completed....I think ;P
Hopefully I'll get an update posted in the near future!

Thanks! Yes, I was a little hesitant buying the stones sight-unseen, but they put a nice assortment together.

Nope, no frosted back. Just a plain 'ol white poster board from the arts 'n crafts store that I cut to size.

At Lowe's. You should be able to find it at any home improvement store in the lighting section. It's sold as a 'light diffuser'. Paid about $7 for a huge piece of it.
