My first "big" (55 gallon) tank (56k)

Hello. I started up a 55 gallon tank a couple of months ago. Last night I took new pictures of the tank and was really struck by how much it had grown in two months. There are no difficult plants or fine aquascaping here. But I thought someone else might enjoy seeing the series too.

on 7/5, newly planted:

on 7/25:

on 8/29:

The tank is home to around 100 red cherry shrimp and maybe 20 Heterandria formosa. I'm (pretty conservatively) dosing dry fertilizers in a not-entirely-unlike-EI way. Substrate is onyx sand. An Eheim 2215 filters it. And it gets 130W of 6700K compact fluorescent light for 8 hours a day.

The CO2 supply is a DIY yeast setup (2 2 liter bottles) and a big DIY PVC reactor. The yeast setup is almost but not quite cutting it. I see a pressurized setup in my future.

Wow, looks great. Nice healthy plants.
I'm putting together a 55 as well, and was trying to decide what filter to use; would you say the 2215 does a good job? Would you choose it again if you could choose any filter?

Well, I'm sure your RCS and formosa are happy in their home.

Thanks, Haeun. I have to admit that this 2215 is the only canister filter I've ever used. So you probably want to take my opinion pretty lightly. That said, I'm very happy with it. It doesn't have all the neat media trays, integrated shut-off valves, etc. that many filters have. But it's simple and it's quiet.

I tried to clean it out last weekend, but there really wasn't much to clean yet. (Aside from some shrimp, that is.) Sometimes I wish I could get just a little more flow. Initially I thought the flow was going to be a little too high. But that was before I added the Eheim prefilter, the co2 reactor, and two months of tubing gunk. For that reason, I'm curious as to what it'd be like if I'd stepped up to the 2217. But that might be overkill.

I've removed the H. formosa (except for a single sneaky male about whom I've stopped worrying). And the RCS have really taken off. Hard to estimate, but I'm guessing there approximately a bazillion of them.

Is the substrate strictly onyx sand? How deep is the substrate?

Thanks!

I think it looks very nice now that is has filled in. I will be setting up my 55 shortly, still deciding on plants and fishies. I will be starting off with DIY CO2 and dry ferts also.
