"Ultimus" Mini-S

This is definitely the last tank project for me (no more room in my apartment). This project will not be running any filtration and the only thing that will be providing water movement is the bubbles from the CO2 diffuser.

Equipment
Tank: DoAqua mini-S
Lighting: 12" Finnex Fugeray
CO2: Aquatek mini regulator, 20oz paintball cylinder, NAG mini diffuser
Substrate: ADA Aqua Soil Amazonia
Hardscape: (3) Yamaya stones & (2) manzanita driftwood

Flora: HC, "Monte Carlo", Crypt. wendtii "Mi Oya",Crypt. wendtii "Tropica" & Crypt. willisii, M. pteropus "Trident"
Fauna: GF's betta

Pics to follow when I received the light fixture. Going to do another DSM. Has anyone out there done a dry start w/ java fern?

DSM start for "Ultimus"

Here's the 1st pic of my last project tank. Planted HC plugs in the foreground because of availablity but, have saved a space in the back left corner for "Monte Carlo". Placed the C. willisii in front of the driftwood base, C. wendtii "Tropica" to the left and behind the base and C. wendtii "Mi Oya" to the right of the base. Superglued rhizomes and plantlets of M.pteropus "Trident" on both driftwood pieces.

Photo period is set at 6hrs on/4hrs off/6hrs on/8hrs off. When the HC & Monte Carlo plugs have become established, flooding will occur and the paintball CO2 setup will be started. With lighting and CO2 being synced and no filtration planned for this project, would this be considered low-tech?

Planted the Monte Carlo in the back left corner. The plantings were from individual sprigs of M. umbrosum while the HC was planted using plugs. Pics will be posted when the foreground plantings have become established.

Update

Week 3 and the HC plugs are becoming established and adapting to emerged state. The Monte Carlo is putting down roots and new small leaves have been observed. The 3 crypt sp. have had trims of thier melting leaves and have seen new growth.

Misting continues every other day and additional "Trident" java fern plantlets have been placed in some of the small crevices in the DW.

Finally, I will be using a glass diffuser for CO2 distribution and also as a method of providing water movement. The rising CO2 bubbles will push water up and in theory, turn over the water. Has anybody used this method successfully?

Pics update

Pics on 3 week growth progress of HC, "Monte Carlo" & "Trident" java fern along with "Tropica", "Mi Oya" & willisii crypts. Looks like crypt melt has stopped and new leaves are showing up. With DSM and rhizome type plants, the need for anchoring rhizomes & plantlets are non issues. DSM+patience=success!

Tank Update

Super Bowl Sunday and some good news, some bad. The HC plugs in front have slowly melted away, probably due to excessive water collecting in this low spot. Too much misting, trying to keep the "Trident" java fern attached on the upper reaches of the driftwood moist. Had some sprigs of Monte Carlo that I planted in it's place. Sopped up the excess moisture and for now, stopped misting the elevated java fern. The "Mi Oya" crypts are growing more erect while the "Tropica" crypts are putting out smaller prone leaves. The willisii crypts are adjusting well to their position in front of the driftwood with minimal melt.

When flood day comes, may reconsider the use of CO2 glass diffuser only and may include a small powerhead (Rio+ 50) to provide circulation and atomize the CO2 (DIY mod to powerhead rotor and intake housing). Any thoughts?

cool start so far! why not add a little red when the tank is flooded?

Thanks for looking. The "Mi Oya" has some red in it and the "Tropica" is kinda reddish brown.

One idea is to use the eheim or ada skimmer as a filter. They will keep your surface clean and keep the water moving enough.

Thanks for the suggestion. If I go that route of using an impeller to distribute and atomize CO2, I'll seriously consider it. Is the Ehiem 350 smaller that the Rio+ 50? Want to minimize anything in the tank.

I'm not familiar with the Rio. I did have the ADA skimmer and sold it. It would be fine in a large tank, but I didn't like it in my mini m.
