I get the idea, but I don't like them. Especially with Discus in there.

so is it some form of suction of the water up and then filtered back into the tank?

Looks like it operates on the same theory as a pet's self watering bowl? With water equilibrium? (water level going down on the bottom will cause the water in the reservoir to fill it). But how do you fill the main tank without disturbing the equilibrium?

OK, found this link on how to make one:

http://www.nettally.com/palmk/FishHiRise.html

Which has me confused since the videos must not be closed systems since they have air stones in the reservior? If it were the air would be trapped at the top and push the water out?

found something else:

I'm sure there is some sort of 1 way valve so in an emergency it doesn't all gush out

I'm just wondering how the air bubbles keep from building up and pushing the water down and out........?
