100g Hex Shrimp Tank

I work at a fish store and am often offered used tanks for cheap or free. I wasn't all that keen on taking this hex as it was in really terrible condition and I'm not the fondest of the shape. Once I heard it would be going to the dump I had to take it...

So I spent a day refinishing the entire tank. 600, 1500, and then 2000 grit hand sanded inside and out and then gave it a good buffing. Up top will be a DIY LED fixture I just took off another tank. I'll be running 3 50w chips (50x1w diode arrays), two are either 3200K or 2800K, and the center is 6700K.

I'm thinking low tech on this tank - ferns, mosses, crypts, a sword or two... Filtration will be a single large sponge filter in the center hidden behind an 'island' of driftwood. So far I'm thinking of keeping the entire tank as a shrimp/dwarf crayfish tank so I wont have to heat it. If I do end up heating the tank I might toss in a large school of mosquito rasbora.

Thoughts/recommendations are welcome. Photos to come.

Parallel sides are 29" apart, corner to corner 33", and it's 30" tall.

It's a good sized tank but the opening is only 6.5" wide which really limits me on larger pieces of driftwood. I would love a gigantic stump dead center with the sponge filter stuffed inside but there's no way I'd get it to fit without cutting it up substantially.

I assumed the whole top came off since you were INSIDE the tank! :P I would really want the top on that fully accessible, I suppose the lid is part of the structural integrity of the tank?

See you post a picture of yourself shirtless in a tank and the ladies come out.

At least I'm assuming the last three posts were from females from the avatars and usernames.

Unfortunately the top does not come off and does provide structural integrity to the tank. I'm still not totally sure how I fit inside but can tell you that it was a very tight fit and my chest is still sore from squeezing in there. The shirtlessness was a necessity, both to fit and it gets really hot in fish tanks...but if it'll up my ratings as well...

Thanks for the comments everyone.

Very nice job cleaning it up. Can't wait to see what you have planned. I didn't even know they made sponge filters for 100g tanks!

Looks very similar to the tanks you see at restaurants.
