care to elaborate why these specimens are so much better?
-is it just the color variations?
-fish fin structure and health?

I'm going to a NYC Discus place tomorrow.
my camera sux, but I'll post a few shots of
their more interesting offerings and prices
just for comparison sake.

IMHO, your avatar is a far superior specimen to anything that guy had, but I wasn't particularly taken by his color varieties. Also, splotchy eye color like many of his fish had is not a desirable trait. Shape and health looked fine to me (other than a couple of fish that had slightly disproportionate sized eyes) These fish are clearly better than you would usually get in a lfs, but at least here in the states, you could get better fish from a breeder. BTW, if you want to see some amazing discus and rainbows, AQUASAUR has some amazing pics on this very forum.
