Wabi Kusa - First Attempt

Saw some people recently with little wabi-kusa bowls and thought they looked really nice and refreshing. I got a random bowl from Marshalls two weeks ago, and got some MGOPS, spaghnum moss, and some leftover eco complete.

To make the ball, I wet the MGOPS but I wet it too much so I mixed in the eco to make it the right consistency. Then made it into ball form and smacked on the layer of spaghnum moss all around. The spaghnum moss definitely kept the whole ball together, especially while planting.

I got some random aquatic plants from a RAOK, and some nice looking small plants from my backyard/garden back home in Brooklyn. There's still some real estate on the ball and would like to add some HC/glosso to carpet around. Been keeping it covered 90% of the day. The light is a simple 13W CFL (it doesn't list the color temp on the bulb) on a gooseneck kept like 2" above the bowl.

Looks great! If I were you I would trim down all the plants to let them re-shape to the new environment they are in and you would be able to use those trimmings to help fill some more space on the ball.

Just a little update. Did some cutting and re-planting. Can I leave the bowl uncovered, or will it dry out? I've been leaving it covered during the day, and airing it out when I get home for a couple hours, then cover it up again.

This is awesome. Looks even better since the trim. I would leave it open to the air all the time and mist it twice a day. You want some air circulation or you'll get mold.

Man that is awesome. Might be a great use for clippings from the larger tank. Excellent work I must say!
