My Planted aquarium, any suggestions?

Hi there,

I've recently set up a planted tank (48x18(high)x15") and was wondering if you have any suggestions? I'm pretty new to planted tanks.

Cheers

As you can see it has started to fill in. The two plants in the back right were cut down yesterday and i planted what i cut off. They should be bushy and back the the surface in no time.

I also have some more plants arriving on Tuesday. Sorry for the caps but i copied the e-mail receipt.

LIMNOPHILA AROMATICA
ELEOCHARIS PARVULUS
BACOPA MONNIERA
NESAEA CRASSICAULIS
GLOSSOSTIGMA ELATINOIDES
ALTERNATHERA ROSAEFOLIA
BLYXA AUBERTII

Nice tank -- love the tiger lotus and the pebbles in the sand! Already a marked improvement in both the aquascaping and photo skills between those two pics.

People on this forum are always harping people who have too many varieties of fish. You're looking good in the fish department (the school of rummies is always appealing), save those balas which I have always thought a bit too large and skittish to do well in a meticulously planted tank. In your case I would almost suggest limiting yourself to a certain number of plants. You have a little of everything. I would personally work on growing a larger patch of one of your favorite plants.

This was the same problem I had when I started my first tank and I really learned a lot about planting and the propogation of stem plants when I finally decided to take out several varieties of swords to attempt to grow a large patch of baby tears.

I like it One thing i would suggest is, like bayleo said, cut down on numbers of species and bump up amounts of just a few species. Also, behind the tiger lotus, I think you would do good with some more limnophila,to fill that space up a bit . Overall though this is a very nice scape.

It looks like you got some mondo grass in the left...maybe not but if it is...ditch it and replace with some clippings off the hygro you have started in the rear left. That grass is terrestrial and will only fade away with time.
The lotus plants you have in there you will need to keep trimmed and prevent the leaves from hitting the water surface and you will grow a nicer , fuller plant in the long run also.

Good start !

Hey again,

I've had a re-shuffle. Binned loads of plants and put in a few new ones. IS this any better? It will take a while to fill in. I have planted some glosso at the front left of the tank, hopefully that will do well.

P.S Thats how we write the date in the UK day/month/year. I'm not stupid, honest!

That's beautiful-and especially for someone new to planted tanks! I look forward to updates as things grow out and the tank continues to evolve... you should be very happy with this beauty to get lost in every day!

Shameek, just curious, for your first post at this forum you sure dug deep, any particular reason?
